The US ambassador to the country, Reuben Brigety, has claimed South Africa has supplied weapons to Russia in the war with Ukraine. He alleged that a Russian ship was loaded with ammunition and arms in Cape Town last December, despite South Africa claiming its neutrality since the conflict began. How did officials react to this claim? President Cyril Ramaphosa's office said it was disappointed by the claims and said no evidence has been provided to support them. But in a media briefing on Thursday, Mr Brigety referred to the docking of a cargo ship in the Simon's Town naval base between 6 and 8 December last year. He said he was "confident" it uploaded weapons and ammunition "as it made its way back to Russia". In the wake of the allegations, the South African government announced the establishment of an independent inquiry led by a retired judge, a spokesman for the president's office said. The US has been critical for months about South Africa's continued relationship with Russia.
