The Significance of the name of God
The meaning and Significance of the name by which God is referred to in the Bible is of the greatest importance for understanding his being, his authority and his attributes. The names act as a roadmap for leaning about the character of God. Since the Bible is God’s word to us, the name he chooses in the scripture are meant to reveal his true nature to us and to help us.
Understanding His Being
The names of God identify the supremacy in his being. It disclose God’s nature and carries with it the elements of authority, power, Holiness, His ways, and what God means to each of us as human beings and this is why the name is treated with such importance.
Understand His Authority
” The word of God reveals His name as his authority “. ” His name implies authority”. The Name defines the every nature, character, and essence of God. ” His Name means to cause to be”. To claim references to his name refer only to his authority. His name can actually be replaced with the word authority.
” That at the name (authority) of Jesus every knees should bow, of things in heaven, and things in Earth, and things u under the earth; (php. 29-10)”
The truth of his name has been revealed to us all through the scripture, and it is now our responsibility to use that knowledge to begin to honour him by calling on his revealed, personal name. Psalms 34:3, ” O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.” Psalms 68:4, ” Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: exolt him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.” 1Kings 8:35, ” ….if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them:” God reminds us repeatedly that his people are called by his name.
” If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves…. (2chr. 7:14)
O Lord, forgive; o Lord hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. (Dan. 9:19)”
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and Earth is named. (Eph. 3:14-15) “
Understand His Attributes
God’s ‘nature’ means his characteristics, his attributes, his qualities. God’s attributes are basically revealed truths of the descriptions from God’s word of what he reveals himself to be.
These Attributes are:
Omniscient: His name is, ” The All Knowing God.” God knows everything. his knowledge is perfect. Psalms 139:1-6. ” Great is our Lord, and of great power: his Understanding is infinite”. Psalms 147:5
Omnipotent: his name is, ” The All Powerful God.” God has all power. Jer. 32:17 “Ah Lord God! Behold, thou hast made the heavens and the Earth by thy great power and by thy outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for thee”
Omnipresent: His name is, ” The Ever Present God.” God is present everywhere all the time. ” The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the evil and the good.” Pro. 15:3
Eternal: His name is, ” Eternal God.” God has no beginning and end and not confined to time. ” The Eternal God is thy Refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms…” (Deut. 33:27, Deut. 32:40).
Everlasting: his name is, ” The Everlasting God.” El Olam means God of eternity. ” And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.” Gen. 21:33. Psalm 90:2.
Immutable: His name is, ” The Unchangeable God.” God never changes. ” For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore he sons of Jacob are not consumed. ” (Mal. 3:6.)
Incomprehensible: God is beyond our understanding. ” Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?” Job 11:7…. who can understand? Job 26:14
Self-Existent: God depends on nothing for his existence. ” And God siad unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM….” Ex. 3:14. Father has life in himself. Son has life in himself. John 5:26
Self-sufficient: God brings about his will without help. ” If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fullness thereof.” Ps. 50:12, Acts 17:24-25.
Infinite: God has no limit and the heavens cannot contain. “…. behold the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builder” 1king 8:27 “…..his greatness is unsearchable.” Ps. 145:3.
Transcendent: God is above creation. He exists totally apart from his creation. ” God’s ways and thoughts are higher than mans.” Isa. 55:8-9, Ps. 113:4-5.
Sovereign: his sovereignty is part of his name. He is in total control and is totally supreme. God does whatever he pleases. ” Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in Earth, in the seas, and all deep places.” Ps. 135:6.
Holy: His Holiness is a part of name. God is morally excellent and perfect. He does not do anything wrong. “….and Holy is his name.” Luke 1:49 “…….who is like thee, glorious in holines,” Ex. 15:11 (……Holy, holy, holy, is Lord ….Isa.6:3), ” for I the LORD your God am holy.” Lev. 19:2″.
Righteous: His Righteousness is a part of his name. God always does right. God’s righteousness is unchanging and endures from age to age. ” Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.” Ps. 119:142. “He is the Rock; his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of Truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” Deut. 32:4.
Just: His Justice is another part of his name. God is fair in all his actions. He is just and he forgives iniquity. ” Justice and Judgmentare the habitation of thy throne: Mercy and truth shall go before thy face.” Ps. 89:14. Justice is the foundation of his throne.
Merciful: His Mercy is another part of his name. Lovingkindness, compassion. God exhibits active compassion towards those who offend Him. ” Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth Mercy: for thou tenderest to every man according to his work.” Ps. 62:12. Read ps. 89:14, ps. 106:44-45.
Long-suffering: His long-suffering is another part of his name. Righteous anger is slow to be Kindled. God is slow to anger. Num. 14:18. ” The Lord is not slack concerning his promises, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us ward…” 2Peter 3:9.
Wisdom: His Wisdom is another part of his name. This causes him to choose righteous ends. “….. Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his.” Dan. 2:20. His Understanding is inscrutable. Isa. 40:28.
Goodness: his goodness is another part of his name. God gives according to his good will. He indeed is good for his loving-kindness is everlasting. 2Chr. 5:13. ” Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way,” ps. 25:8. Ps. 106:1.
Wrathful: God is wrathful. He hates all unrighteousness. ” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” Rom. 1:8.
Truthful: his truth is another part of his name. He is God of truth. whatever God says is … truth. ” Into thine hand I committ my spirit : thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.” Ps. 31:5. God cannot lie. Titus 1:3.
Faithful: his faithfulness is another part of his name. God is always true to promises, he keeps Covenant. ” Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the Faithful God…..” Deut.7:9. “….great is thy faithfulness.” La. 3:23. 2Ti 2:13, 1Th.5:24.
Jealous: God’s name is “Jealous”. “…..for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God,” Ex. 20:5. ‘ for thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.’ Exo. 34:14.
