Why Study The Names of God
A deep understanding of the names of God enriches our relationship with God. The benefits to us are enormous and so cannot be over emphasized. These are:
To Enrich Our Prayer Life
God’s word reveals in the New Testament that JESUS gave His disciples Instruction that they were to pray to the Father in his name. Jesus also commands us to ask in Jesus name because all authority is in that name “Jesus”.
” They shall call on my name, and I will hear the; i will say, it is my people: and they shall say, the Lord is my God (Zec. 13:9).
If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. (John 14:14).
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. (John 15:16).
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. (John 16:23).”
Meditating on God’s name also is to concentrate on his name as we pray. Heaven moves through the name of Jesus. It is the name of power and authority, the name which destroys the works of the enemy. When you pray out using the name of God, you increase your prayer effectiveness.
To Enrich Our Worship Life
The purpose for which man exists especially that believer is to glorify God and praise his holy name. We can worsh God by either calling his name appropriately or by recalling What God has done for us.
” Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of the rejoice that seek the Lord. (1Chr. 16:10).
Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worsh the Lord in the beauty of Holiness. (1Chr. 16:29).”
Our ability to glorify God is based on the knowledge of God and knowing his personality. This in totality means offering that which should accrue to God as praise, Thanksgiving, Worship, reverence and service to his because of who he is, his attributes, essence and what he does.
” Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Eph. 5:20).
By him therefore le lt us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. (Heb. 13:15).”
The names of God described his being, existance, character and personality. This means that the names of God embodies the reality of his entity. For this reason, with little Understanding of God, our praise to him is limited. But as we begin to know more of God’s news, we are able to praise him better. To call on the name of the Lord was to Worship him as God. (Gen. 21:33 , 26:25).
” From the rising of the sum unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised. (Ps. 113:3).
Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created. (Ps. 148:5).
Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. (1Chr. 16:8).

For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name (Psa. 33:21).”
Believing in the name of Jesus causes signs to follow you. ” And these signs shall follow them that believe…” Mark 16:17.
